34 Best Things To Do In Canggu, Bali

Searching for the best unique things to do in Canggu? I’ve been to the city multiple times over the years, and in that time I’ve managed to uncover some of the best underrated experiences in the city.

Canggu is one of the liveliest destinations in Bali, bustling with digital nomads, backpackers, and expats. The city was once a hidden surf paradise, but over the years it has grown and grown to become a vibrant hub for travelers from all over the world.

Without a doubt, some of the best things to do in Canggu include

Though Canggu has never been at the top of my Bali bucket list (which you can read about in my post ‘Is Bali Overrated?’), with these 36 amazing experiences, you can make any trip to the city incredible. 

The 34 Best Things To Do In Canggu

Canggu can either be the most, or the least fun place you’ll visit in Bali, and it all depends on knowing where to go. 

I’ve done the hard work for you and created a list of 34 of the best activities in and around Canggu so that you can have the most exciting stay possible.

1. Explore Batu Bolong Hidden Temple

The Batu Bolong Hidden Temple is a hidden gem, a quiet seaside temple untouched by the crowds you can find at many other temples in the region. The temple is used by Balinese people as a setting for reflection and connection with their spirituality.

Since the temple is much less touristy, hiring a private driver is the best way to visit. I did this when staying in Canggu, and it allowed me to create a full-day itinerary with other stops as well. 

Make sure not to wear revealing clothing, touch sacred statues, or be too loud in the temple.  It’s so important to stay respectful of local religious customs!

2. Chill at Pretty Poison Skatepark

One of Canggu’s true social hidden gems, Pretty Poison Skatepark is a uniquely cool venue with a skate bowl, bar, and live music events. This is one that luckily, only Canggu regulars and expat locals know about, so you won’t find the crazy crowds here.

It’s a popular spot among young people and the skateboarding community in Canggu. It has a laid-back atmosphere, and you can spend the afternoon watching skaters, having drinks, and enjoying Canguu’s alternative social scene!

3. Experience Waterfalls on the Tegenungan Waterfall Excursion

You can’t go to Bali without visiting its beautiful waterfalls. Tegenungan Waterfall is a natural wonder not far from the city, with a cascading waterfall, lush greenery, and a beautiful scenic drive to get there.

The best part is, you can even swim there! Spend the afternoon exploring the surrounding jungle, and floating under the waterfall. Read here to find all the best Bali waterfall tours, so that you can experience it for yourself!

4. Take a Sunset Horseback Ride

A sunset horseback tour is one of the most romantic, or simply just fun experiences in Canggu. The sunsets in the city are some of the most famous in Bali, and for good reason, their vivid colors are enough to take your breath away!

What better way to experience the incredible sunset, than to hop on horseback and take a peaceful walk along the edge of the sea.

5. Do an Instagram tour

I know I’m not the only one who went to Canggu to get some photos for my Instagram feed, and as a busy photographer, this tour was a godsend. 

The tour will take you to a group of Bali’s most iconic Instagram spots so that you can get all of your shots in one go and enjoy the rest of your holiday with no pressure!

6. Explore Canggu’s Underground Bar Scene

One thing Canggu is well known for is its nightlife. And if you’re looking for an alternative experience away from more mainstream spots, look no further than Canggu’s underground bars. 

Places like ‘The Back Room’ and ‘Black Cat Mini Mart’, just to name a few, have innovative cocktails, live music, and a vibey laid-back atmosphere. 

7. Take a Day Trip to snorkel and dive in Nusa-Penida

No trip to Bali is incomplete without an incredible snorkeling or diving experience. Sadly, Canggu doesn’t offer that, but being the center of tourism on the Island means it’s very accessible.

The Nusa Penida Snorkeling Adventure tour picks you up from the city center and takes you by fast boat to the beautiful island of Nusa Penida. The water is almost Gatorade blue, with white sandy beaches and some of Indonesia’s most famous natural wonders. Amazingly, this is also one of the best places in the world to swim with Manta Rays!  

I did this tour in June 2023, and had one of the most incredible experiences of life, seeing not one, but three giant manta rays.

8. Attend a Beach Party

Canggu is most popular with visitors between 18 and 28, which means one thing is guaranteed, amazing parties. And when you’re on a tropical island, why not party on the beach?

While sometimes you can just find bach parties popping up along the shoreline, the best way to be in the know about them is to join Facebook Groups. Groups with keywords like ‘Canggu Nightlife’ ‘Canggu Expats’ and ‘Canggu Parties’ usually have the best results.

Since these parties are usually advertised on social media it might take some searching to find them, but it’s worth it.

9. Treat yourself to a Balinese Spa Experience

Going to the spa in Bali is just… incredible. The experience is a combination of traditional techniques and modern luxury, and the best part is it’s ¼ of the price it would cost at home.

Canggu is home to some of Bali’s most beautiful upscale spas, with authentic massages, facials, and wellness treatments. Try and choose a spa that incorporates local ingredients, like a Balinese facial with coconut, honey, and tropical herbs!

10. Take a Day Trip to Ubud

There are two ways to approach a day trip to Ubud, the first is an organized tour like the one I recommend. This tour will take you to all the major Ubud sites, like the monkey forest, waterfalls, and rice terraces.

The second is more relaxed, spend the day exploring the winding streets of Ubud’s center. Visit the countless artisan stores, eat at a local warung, admire the street art, and you can still visit the monkey forest since it’s right nearby!

I’d personally recommend visiting Ubud for more than one day and doing both, but if you’re short on time and want to see just what Ubud has to offer, the Best Of Ubud Tour might be your best choice.

11. Balinese Cooking Class

Balinese food is… delicious, and one of the most fun things I did in Canggu was learn to cook it myself. 

Local cooking schools, such as Amala’s Cooking Class or The Santai’s Bali Cooking Class, have amazing local teachers with lifetimes of knowledge about techniques, ingredients, and flavors.

Many classes actually take you to the local market before you cook to pick out your ingredients, which is an experience on its own. With so much new knowledge about ingredients, and recipes, you’ll be able to take some of Bali home with you!

12. Explore Canggu’s Night Markets and Warungs

While Western food can be quite expensive in Canggu, local food remains super cheap. Canggu is admittedly the most expensive city I traveled to food-wise, but a plate of Balinese cuisine from a local warung or market should cost just $2.50-4 Australian Dollars. 

For even more atmosphere, head to Canggu’s night markets, Love Anchor or Pasar Malam are two markets that bring together local food vendors with a whole variety of dishes. 

Taste street food, hang out with locals and travelers, and soak up the vibrant atmosphere of Canggu at night!

Pro Tip: Many people let their worry about getting ‘Bali belly’, and let it stop them from trying local food. But guess what? My friends and I ate at countless local markets and only got sick from… an upscale Italian restaurant and a Western sandwich shop.

13. Participate in a Beach Volleyball Tournament

Canggu’s beaches are often host to relaxed and casual volleyball games and tournaments, which is an energetic way to meet other travelers, have fun, and enjoy the beach culture.

Like beach parties, they can be a bit difficult to find. I recommend joining Facebook groups about volleyball in Canggu or just walking along any of the main beaches, where you should find some nets. 

It’s a bit of luck, but if you find one they’re so much fun!

14. Hop on Canggu’s Street Art Hunt

Canggu is a street art paradise, covered with hidden murals and graffiti, making ‘just walking around’, one of the best things to do in the city. 

Take a walk around the town center, or head to the backstreets, to see an amazing mix of local and foreign street art concepts. If you like art, this is a really fun way to spend an afternoon.

15. Discover Black Sand Beaches

Why go to a tropical island without spending all day at the beach?

Head off the usual beach path to beaches like Pererenan and Seseh, both with a distinct feature, their black sand. This less visited coastal gems are a much more secluded and atmospheric experience. 

With dark volcanic sand, and blue water, it’s the perfect backdrop for a few hours of relaxation and swimming.

16. Do a Street Art Graffiti Workshop

Channel your creativity and urban style by learning graffiti techniques from local artists. It’s a super fun activity that literally lets you leave your mark in the city forever!

Programs like the one run at ALLCAPS Park, which is a 3000sqm open street art gallery in the city, allow people of all ages to learn street art from professionals. It’s a super unique way to spend a few hours.

17. Volunteer with Environmental Initiatives

While Canggu is a whole lot of fun, it’s important to recognise the impact that tourism has had on the city, and especially on it’s environment. 

Getting involved with local environmental initiatives is a great way to give back and contribute to the well-being of Canggu’s natural surroundings.

Whether it’s participating in beach cleanups, tree planting activities, or collaborating with eco-conscious organizations, volunteering offers an opportunity to give back to locals and the surrounding environment.

18. Trek through Canggu’s Rice Fields

Though Canggu isn’t well known for rice fields, it’s nextdoor neighbor Tabanan is. In fact, it’s literally known as the ‘rice bowl’ of Bali.

Since Bali is easy to get around because of it’s amazing Grab and Gojeck transport systems, getting to Tabanan is as easy as calling a bike. And you can then spend the day walking around the regions beautiful rice fields.

19. Shop at Samadi Sunday Market

Samadi Sunday Market is a hidden gem in Canggu with a really unique shopping experience. The market has a huge range of stalls with organic products, homemade crafts, handmade clothing and more.

It’s become a haven for people looking for sustainable and locally produced goods in Canggu, and is a great way to support local artisans.

20. Party at La Favela

You’ve probably heard of Old Mans and Finns, but maybe not La Favela. The club is a renowned location nonethlesess, known for it’s atmosphere and Brazilian favela-inspired decor.

The venue has a diverse crowd, including locals, expats and tourists making it a great place to meet new people. 

The DJ’s have a mic of house, techno and electric dance music, while the bar serves up a huge variety of cocktails and drinks. They even regularly host themed events and special nights.

21. Discover the Petitenget Temple

Petitenget Temple, situated in Seminyak, Bali, is a beautiful Hindu temple easily accessible from Canggu. This seaside temple is very spiritually important to the local community, and is dedicated to the Balinese sea deity. 

The temple commonly plays a role in religious ceremonies and festivals, with beautiful architecture, carvings, and a beautiful coastal location.

22. Explore the Abandoned Airplane in South Kuta

You might be thinking, did I hear you right? Yes, just a short drive from Canggu you have the chance to explore an abandoned airplane. 

Located near Pandawa Beach, this mysterious site features a deserted aircraft, and is a famous setting for exploration and photography.

The surreal view of the broken down airplane against the tropical surroundings makes it a captivating site for people wanting to head off the beaten path, and get some awesome photos in the process.

23. Attend a Pottery Class at Nusa Clay Club

For a different artistic experience, try your hand at making pots! The class is run by Susan, who’s an Ubud local and offers a unique opportunity to create your own handmade souvenir.

Spend an afternoon in her beautiful studio at one of her different level classes, and learn how to use a pottery wheel to create gorgeous designs.

Keep in mind that glazing can take up to 2 weeks, so book at the start of your holiday to ensure you can pick it up and take it home!

Opening Times and Prices: Open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 AM – 4 PM. A 2-hour class, which makes 2 pots, costs 395,000 IDR (around $40 AUD)

24. Join a Jungle Night Trek

For the more intrepid adventurers, a trek through the Balinese jungle at night might be your thing. Exploring the jungle at night is a whole new experience, with different atmosphere, ambience, and animals.

Make sure to go with experience local trek leaders, like the guides at the Bali Safari Marine Park.

25. Head out for a Surfing Session

Canggu has been a top surf spot in Bali since it emerged decades ago. Renowned for it’s quality of waves, Canggu pulls surfers of all levels. With challenging breaks, but also easy access to a more laid back surf, it’s the perfect sport to practice, or learn.

The main surf spots, such as Batu Bolong, Echo Beach, and Berawa, offer a variety of wave conditions suitable for both beginners and experienced riders. 

Surf schools like the one below offer lessons from Canggu locals, so that you can learn local technique with a beautiful island backdrop.

26. Mix it up at Canggu’s Rooftop Mixology Class

If you’re looking for a really fun and unique way to spend the evening, head to trendy venues like Cocktail Kitchen to learn how to mix your own amazing cocktails.

You’ll get amazing panoramic views of the city, great vibes, and you’ll of course be able to drink what you’ve created! Its a stylish and modern experience, perfect for anyone for a great night out.

27. Relax at a Beachfront Café like Old Man’s or The Lawn Canggu

Old Man’s and The Lawn are two of Canggu’s most iconic beachside cafe’s. On the scenic coastline, these two spots have a laidback charm (and really good food). 

Old Man’s has a rustic atmosphere and surf-inspired decor that creates a casual and welcoming vibe, while The Lawn has a more sophisticated setting with manicured lawns and comfortable seating.

Weather you’re there for sunset drinks in the evening or a relaxed beachside brunch, you can’t miss relaxing at these beautiful spots.

28. Take a Scenic Motorcycle Ride Through Canggu’s Countryside

One of my favorite things about Canggu has to be the motorbikes, they’re just such a fun way to get around. I loved riding around Canggu, even just on the back of a Grab bike and feeling the wind in my hair.

Canggu’s regional areas have some of the most picturesque winding roads, hidden gems, and little villages, that are best accessed by bike. 

A motorcycle ride, weather you rent (which I don’t recommend in Canggu, as it’s so chaotic and busy), or hire, is an amazing way to explore with a bit of adrenaline.

29. Explore the Berawa Beach Fisherman’s Village

Berawa Beach Fisherman’s Village in Canggu is one of the islands beautiful authentic fishing villages. With colorful fishing boats and traditional wooden huts along the coastline, it’s a great way to see the less westernised version of Bali. 

And the best part? You can try some of the amazing fresh caught seefood at local warungs, or simply just relax by the beautiful seaside.

30. Join a Beach Cleanup Initiative for a Positive Impact

Contribute to preserving Canggu’s beautiful beaches with a beach clean up initiative. Join environmental efforts by picking up litter and having conversations about sustainable travel.

It’s a hands on way to make a selfless difference and positive impact in the community.

31. Catch a Live Performance at Love Anchor Market

Most people just know Love Anchor Market as a place to buy small gifts and jewellry, but it also turns into a hub for live performances. Catching a live show here is a great way to spend an evening, especially as the market turns into night food stalls!

Weather it’s local musicians, cultural performances, or contemporary acts, Love Anchor Market becomes a great place to vibe to the music, eat, and shop.

32. Practice Yoga

Bali is famous for it’s yoga practices, and Canggu is home to several famous yoga studios to. The Practice and Serenity Eco Guesthouse are two places you can go to relax and exercise in the beautiful Balinese setting. 

The studios offer a wide range of classes, from beginner-friendly to advanced, allowing you to find the perfect balance for your own skill level.

One of my favorite things in Canggu was waking up in the morning and doing yoga, it’s an amazing way to wake up and get ready for the day of exploring infront of you. Sessions cost an average of 130K (13 Australian Dollars).

33. Visit the Bamboo Village

Like the fishing village, Canggu’s Bamboo village is another local spot you have to stop while youre in the city. The village is an eco-friendly community showcasing sustainable living and bamboo craftsmanship.

Visitors can look around, or join workshops to learn about their bamboo construction techniques. Which is a super cool way to engage in the local culture.

34. Head Out to the Rice Terraces Trek in Jatiluwih

And finally, head a little out of the city on a scenic trek through the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its beautiful terrace landscapes.

It’s a bit farther from Canggu, but well worth the time it takes you get there. With an intricate network of rice paddies, surrounded by rolling hills and jungle. It’s one of the most beautiful panoramic views in rural Bali.
